IVANA BILIĆ, Zagreb (Croatia) is one of the most distinctive marimba voices. Known for her versatility, she appears as soloist with major orchestras and participates in crossover projects. Ivana regularly gives masterclasses, participates in marimba festivals and serves as jury member at marimba and percussion competitions in Europe and USA. She is the recipient of many awards (Best young Musician, Croatian discographic award Porin…). Her marimba and vibraphone pieces have been published by Malletworks and Cantus. She participated in ZMF New Music for Marimba Project as one of the few marimbists who premiered and recorded the commissioned works. Ivana is a MarimbaOne artist, her signature line of mallets has been launched in March 2008. In 2010 she will perform at the Minnesota 2010 Marimba Festival and Conference and serve as faculty at ZMF 2010 in Amsterdam.
DANE M. RICHESON is recognized as one of the most versatile virtuosi in percussion performing jazz, world and contemporary music with such diverse artists as Bobby McFerrin, Gunther Schuller, Lionel Hampton, Dianne Reeves, Lyle Mays etc He is Professor of Music at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he is director of percussion studies. Under the direction of Mr. Richeson ensemble LUPÉ has released 2 cds with excellent reviews in magazines Downbeat and Fanfare. Mr. Richeson earned his master’s degree from Ithaca College, where he was graduate assistant under renowned marimbist/ composer Gordon Stout.
He has lived in Ghana, studying the music and dance of the Ewe people with master drummer Godwin Agbeli and gyil with Kakraba Lobi; Cuba, where he studied with Afro-Cuban drummer Jesús Alfonso; Brazil where he studied the drumming traditions of the State of Bahia with Giba Conceicao and choro/MPB styles with Guello. Mr. Richeson has performed on many recordings for Blue Note Records, Origin Records, Accurate, Innova etc .and the major motion picture, Sphere.
The young Chinese-Canadian marimbist and composer PIUS CHEUNG won public acclaim with his CD of Bach’s Goldberg Variations which received excellent reviews in The New York Times. His second CD, Symphonic Poem, comprised entirely of his own compositions, was released in November 2009.
Since his U.S. concerto debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2003, Mr. Cheung has toured extensively as a concerto/recital soloist and lecturer around the world (Carnegie Hall, Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Conservatoire de Paris, Curtis Institute of Music,...) He won 1st Prize at the Classical Marimba League’s 2007 Composition Competition for his Three Etudes for marimba solo. His compositions have been played by renowned marimbists and chosen as repertoire for numerous international competitions. He received his Artist Diploma from The Boston Conservatory, and his Doctorate from the University of Michigan.
Mr. Cheung is a Yamaha and Vic Firth Artist.
